My gf's car dies when her AC is on high and she comes to a stop. Supposedly there was some problem with Celebrities that caused this. Personally, it just sounds like it's idling too low, but the car sounds great when idleing, so I'm not entirely.

Any suggestions?

It looks like the part I'd need would be an "idle stop solenoid". But the parts guy at Chevy said that they didn't make this part for this model.

I believe their is an idle solenoid on that car that is supposed to kick up the idle speed when the air compressor is running. You will either have to fix that or turn off the air at every stoplight.

It is an older car, need to check that catalytic converter for being restrictive of exhaust gases, this can cause a power loss that can be too much for this older car. and get the ac serviced the lubricants in the refrigerant could have broken down and is causeing more power loss

Given th age of the car and the fact that everything on this car is a delicate balancing act I would make sure that the battery, cables and connections are in perfect condition and that the battery is not one of those high amp types(cheepie)-(robs your alt. of precious juice) and that all battery connections are(grounds and +'s ) better than new as in additional ground wires and perfectly cleaned and established contacts.

I had a problem like that with my old 1992 Chevy Cavalier. This was years ago, I can't remember what it was from. I got rid of it when I found out it was going to be too much to fix. It had a lot of problems already.

make sure the compressor bearings are ok....it should move freely if you remove the belt.......also, check the belt tension.....the idling too low thing sounds right to me too......the car is old and may run like a top, until something is taxing the engine a little at an idle.....like your A/C compressor
