One of my ancestors tried to steal the state of Arizona. Yes, you read that right. He tried to steal the state of Arizona - and almost got away with it! This was only about 120 years ago. He used forged documents to claim that he owned most of the land in Arizona. Vincent Price played him in the 1950 movie.

A little girl, maybe 2 or 3 years old, surivived a horrific jet crash in Detroit in the late 80's. The plane dropped immediately after lifting off, skidded onto a freeway, and everyone else was killed and the plane was an inferno, burned to ashes. And this little girl survived, hardly any burns, and is today in her early twenties. Absolutely true, research it online for more info. Go to the Detroit Free Press archives for the original crash story, I think it was 1987 or 88.

If you mean a true story that eventually became a book, then I'd say "The Day they Stole the Mona Lisa". Sadly now out of print, this is an utterly fascinating tale of how the most famous painting in the world was actually stolen from the Louvre museum and then eventually found again.

Kinda on the same theme as the last answer, the rescue of British soldiers at Dunkirk, in WWII, is amazing. No certain book in mind, but just to read of the way Brits in their fishing boats made their way across the English channel to help evacuate soldiers trapped on shore on the mainland is interesting.

When I tell you this you won't believe it but it is true. My best friend is a big time hunter. I mean this guy is always in the woods. A few years back he was jumped by a huge black bear. It knocked his gun from his hands. He wrestled the dam thing and pushed it over a cliff. The bear ran off after falling about 12 feet. My buddy was scratched up pretty good. But he is still here God bless him. And the dumb bastard still hunts all the time.
