To reach success, you have to drop the "dog eat dog world" concept. That will definately get in the way of your success.
If you have a vision, goals and a great work ethic, you will go forward. If you have something, a product or service, that you know people want and need, then you are set up for success.
I would like to recommend a book to you called "Secrets of the Millionaire Mind" by T Harv Eker. This book helps you to change your financial blueprint and show you where your thinking can inhibit your wealth. These concepts apply to other areas of your life as well and can really turn your life around.
