Here is the source of that list of games that were pasted in here, most of the games allow you to click on them for additional info about the games themselves:

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardcompatibilitygameslist.htm

I also gave you the link because the list is updated every so often as new emu's (game emulators) becomee availible.

Also, as noted, you need the harddrive in-order to play original Xbox games.

What WASN'T noted is that you need an internet connection too.

When you put an original Xbox game (like Halo 1 or Halo 2) in the 360, the 360 "looks" at the disk and kinda' goes.. 'uhh.. what the heck is THIS?'
The 360 then goes online and checks a microsoft server for a program (called an emulator) which is designed for each game.

The games in that list at the link above, are all games that have had an emulator made for it. Basically, an emulator takes the material on the gamedisk and changes it into something the 360's more advanced system can use.

The emulator is stored on the harddrive so that whenever you want to play that game, it can reuse the same emulatior program without re-downloading it.

Personally, I only have a dial-up connection at home, so I can't hook up my 360 to it. I just sneak my 360 into work after hours and stick game disks into the 360 to get it to download the emulators for me over my internet connection at work so I can play at home.

Four other things you might want to be aware of:
#1 - There are Halo 2 muliplayer maps that will be coming out in Early 2007 that are only usable by the 360.

#2- There is a Halo 3 multiplayer demo coming out right around that time too, it will only work on the 360 too.

#3- Halowars is a 360 exclusive. ( http://www.halowars.com )

#4- If you go to Gamestop and look at the original xbox games, some of them have "BC" written on the pricetags.. That stands for "backwards compatible", and means there's an emulator for that game, and it'll work on your 360, assuming you've got the harddrive & Internet Connection.

There is a list of games that you can play on the XBox 360. I believe Halo is on there. Go to the Xbox website to find the list. It will also tell you what updates you need to install on your 360 to play the games.

You can play certain XBX games on the 360. Those that aren't listed, you can't play until someone writes an emu for it.
