I find they all provide a very poor service, and no reception at all.

Then again I am in England

Cingular has the most towers and the best overall service across the nation.

I live on the Gulf coast. I had Cingular during hurricanes Katrina and Rita; everyone else's phones quit working but mine kept on working like a champ.

Let me tell you when everything else is flying around you and messed up; you will certainly get to appreciate something that works.

I will never change after that experience.

Here's what Consumer Reports has to say on the subject:

If you live in one of the metro areas:
Consider the top-rated carrier, in most cases Verizon, and others if they are within about six points of the leader. (Differences of six points or more are meaningful.) U.S. Cellular in Chicago, which made our list for the first time, and Alltel in Phoenix were strong performers. While we don’t have enough data to generalize about the performance of those two carriers in other parts of the country, if one of them serves your market, it may be worth a look

If you live in an area not covered by the Ratings:
Verizon would be worth considering first, based on its generally higher performance overall. In several of the metro areas, T-Mobile was a strong performer compared with other carriers.

If you often travel to other countries:
Consider T-Mobile or the generally
less-impressive Cingular, both of
which use the GSM (global system for mobile) network and are more likely to provide coverage overseas. See Types for more about the carriers and the networks they use.

I prefer T-Mobile. Verizon is supposed to be good too. I had cingular for years but found many 'mistakes' when it came to billing (of course these 'mistakes' would've made more money for them). I've heard horror stories about Sprint so steer clear of them. Just go to each company's website for details on their plans and phones.

im a cingular customer, and to be honest, verizon is better. everyone says cingular is better because they are a customer with it, but verizon has a better coverage. i dont get service at my house with cingular and there is a tower 5 miles away, maybe closer. and verizon has better phones, too

I have sprint and hate it. When they merged with Nextel, things went downhill. I have dropped calls all the time and I have two towers within 8 miles of my house. I was working with a client in Boston via phone and I was dropped 5 times in an hour. They cannot seem to fix the situation and it has been 8 months. I am going to look at others when my contract is up in April.

Not Cingular or Sprint!

I've heard nothing but horror stories about Sprint, but have never tried it myself. I have had Cingular for years and think it is awesome. I did have one minorly irritating customer service issue with them, but no real big deal. I've always thought they had the best coverage area, but other companies are catching up.

A simple answer - Verizon, because most people in my area have it. Each has its pros and cons, but overall, theyre all about the same and try to rip you off.
