Oh dear, I thought it was quite a simple question about a common misinterpetation about culture and tastes. Nobody has the intelligence to come up with a decent answer yet.
I find it annoying that so many people have it in their heads that young kids who dress differently must be spoilt rich kids - come on doesn't any one agree!!!!!!!!!!

Hey I don't know why everyone's getting their knickers in a knot! I totally agree, kids like that do seem middle class. I suppose it's cos there's a kind of intellectual side to this kind of look too, you know poetry, looking for a deeper meaning in lyrics, they've got nothing else to worry about so they can reflect on the meaning of life, or death, politics, etc.
And yes this is a question about stereotypes, about people with a certain style. Nobody gets upset when you say 'hippy' or 'punk' do they? Why's everyone being so defensive? Are they all middle class with long hair or what?

You can have good taste in music and be lower class. Its just that generally, middle class kids/upper middle class/"rich" kids have more of an ability to buy the clothing generally associated with the "style" of music they listen to.
For instance, on a shopping trip recently, I stopped into a 'punk/goth/skater' store called Hot Topic. This store is absolutely fun to go into and a lot kids buy clothing from there to appear to fit into the aforementioned titles. However, the clothing for sale in this store is not cheap, (i.e. several tops are priced at $35-45). These clothing items are "cool" and "in style" there fore wearing them makes the person looks "cool." Therefore children/teens who wear these clothing either 1. have a job or 2. are from middle/upper middle, etc families who can afford these clothing.
Now, lower class/working class families probably do not buy and would not buy clothing that is priced so high, especially when there are other stores out there that sell good quality clothing at a better price, albeit not the same style.
So, In my OPINION, it all settles down into whether or not a parent is willing to buy a $50 shirt or not. But you don't have to take my word for it.

I don't think there is much of a correlation. Frankly, middle class kids would be the last subgroup I would assume have good taste in music...
If you are poor, you would likely not have a lot of money to invest in seeking music out, but with the glorious web, that can be overcome.
Not sure what you are really trying to get at here, though, sorry.

I think you're a bit ignorant and naive. If you're lower than middle class, then you're poor?? Wise up! Lower than middle class is working class...those who work for their money, in manual labour type job's...that doesn't mean they're poor. But, I agree with your comment, because it is only middle class kid's who ever go down that pathetic dyed black hair route, and I guess it's because they have older parents who have never really given them any attention, but they've wanted for nothing, so they do something outrageous to get some attention.
Working class children are generally more "normal" and have less issue's than middle class children, simply because they've been better treated and more loved. They've been bought up to know that you have to work for what you get, and anyone with that attitude wouldn't knowingly go and spend their money on black hair dye and crap black clothes! They instead would go and buy the latest trainers, and be "cool", so they can go and have fun, rather than walk around looking freakish.

In my experiance good music can cross all borders BUT I think what your reffering to is the psuedo goths.
They seem to be rebelling and angry about what? Mummy and Daddy have 3 cars 6 bedrooms and a maid?

Who on Earth considers long haired rock kids middle class? It is possible that the middle classes avoid rap/rave type noises,as they may consider them inferior rubbish, which in most cases they are.
