This is a very good question.
If you are registered in the UK then you will automatically find your way to the UK site - uk.answers.yahoo.com. However, if you post your question to answers.yahoo.com then it will be seen by USA. If you post to uk.yahoo.answers.com then it will go to the UK audienceand any Americans logged onto that site.
If we were not in the UK site we would be absolutely SWAMPED by questions from all over the world that aren't pertinent to our society. Same for other countries.
I just tested the idea and posted to both. The UK site was 80% answers from UK residents. The USA site was 80% Americans.

Yahoo Answers is an international site where most questions appear for all users. I am in Australia and I can see and answer questions from all over the world without having to access any particular site like the UK & Ireland site. It is a misconception that the questions that you place are only being read and answered by users in that area. You can, however, chose to read questions only from your particular area but I guess most of us don't take that option.

I never got an option. The default site displays all questions posted in English.
I lived in Ireland for twelve years before moving here. Even if I got an option, I'd wander over to check out what was going on every once in a while.

Yahoo lump all English speakers together
So it's not a case of Americans using the UK site, or Brits using the US site.
EDIT
You are posting on what you think is yahoo.co.uk, I'm posting on yahoo.com.
We both see each others posts.
That's because both sites use the same Yahoo!Answers server

None. We get the BBC around 5 times a day and the Uk itself doesn't interest me. Why would we use the Uk site?

Here's the deal. Since your id is registered through a UK site you get UK advertising. It's the same with all the countries. Mexico is in Spanish, etc... Just the advertising. It gives the appearance you're on your own site. Everyone is lumped together here. There's only one Yahoo Answers.

CLICK ON THIS MEXICAN LINK
It goes to this page with spanish writing.
