My doctor recommended a little bit of dark karo syrup for my 1 month old in a bottle of formula (shes breastfed). The poor thing was backed up for 9 days...well she finally went this morning after 3 bottles...1/2 tsp in 2 oz of formula, and it was UNBELIEVABLE! The doctor tried to tell me she wasn't backed up. This little baby pooped about 3 lbs worth of yellow mud!
Should I give her some karo syrup every couple of days if she hasn't gone? I hate to let her get that backed up again she was miserable last time! Are there any bad things about giving her the syrup?

She has been breastfed but was getting a little bit of formula everyonce in a while when she was starving and was clusterfeeding and I didn't have enough milk. I stopped this once she became constipated...but then the doc told me to give it to her again with the syrup in it.

Karo Syrup won't her. But you need to give it to her everyday. To keep her bowels opened. Breast feeding will constipate them. That is normal. But I found baby prune juice was the best thing for my three. 1oz of water - 1oz of prune juice. cheaper and better for babies tummy.

breast fed babies would usually evacuate ( to use a better word) less as breast milk is full of nutrients and all the thing that the babies need. hence all of it is usually absorbed and very little is put to waste. Your baby may be sufferin from colic alone which make her miserable. They build up gas and colic when drinking formula milk as not all babies react well to such milk.
where possible stick with brest milk there is no subsitute for it. It also increases the bonding between the mother and child which alone plays a big factor in the health of the baby.
Also try daily massage. to aid digestion. just ask any midwife ...If I explained the procedure here would take for ever.
hope all this helps

My mom was a nurse for many years and they put one teaspoon of prune juice into the four oz bottle of formula. Didn't give them the runs and they were able to potty.
I assume the karo syrup does the same thing.

"I would wait 3 days if she hasn't went by then, give her another bottle with the karo syrup."
great answer lisa.
breastfed babies arent normally constipated. but i've dealt with plenty of constipation issues with my son who has been on formula. and karp syrups helps, as does a bit of prunce juice mixed equally with water every so often. ive been told by my old pediatrician that karo syrup is safe enough to use in every bottle. but i would double check with you doc.

My mother in law always told me to try the karo syrup. Our pediatrician told us to give our 2 month old 1oz of prune juice with 1 oz of water. We did that everyday for several months and didn't have any more problems.

NO!
And if it wasn't dry and formed, she wasn't constipated!
Breastmilk is a natural laxative. What a breastfed baby who isn't pooping really needs is MORE breastfeeding! As long as she is exclusively breastfed, it would be VERY weird for her to get truely constipated.
Breastmilk is so well-absorbed that it can be NORMAL for some breastfed babies to skip days and not have a BM every day. Typcially, you do see at least one a week though. (And LOOK OUT when they go as it'll probably overwhelm the diaper.)
ETA:
Cluster feeding is very NORMAL behavior.

My doctor said the same thing but then my friend said to try something else and it worked well.
Take a Q-tip and dip it in baby oil and then insert it in the baby's rectum and go around the wall. I know it sounds harsh but it works well. After that bring the baby's knees to his tummy and hold for 10 seconds and then release. Repeat 5 or 6 times and the baby should poop for you. Hope that helps.

i do the same thing with my son (breatfed but bottle when he is still hungry or i am in the car and cant breastfeed him) and i told his doctor i was doing this and he said that it would be normal for him to go only once every three to four days. i started doing that at two weeks old and he is now 3 months. he goes poop about once a day now and i still do it.

Breastfed babies aren't usually constipated.....if anything, they poop ALOT. Are you giving her anything but breastmilk? Switching back and forth to formula might be upsetting her tummy?
I wouldn't do it as a regular habit, you want her to learn to regulate her bowels without help. Its kind of like adults that are addicted to laxitaves?
Good luck!
