If u want to change a career as a researcher for example in history u have to get the basic degree, plus specialize in history of certain regions, u'll be about 38 when u have learnt enough and probably then on, u can take up researching.Personally I dont think ur top of the ladder, people dont reach top without enjoying it.I would suggest take up psychology and by the time ur 34-35 u can start researching, researching about the way human mind works is interesting. But this time take up something that interests u, something u would love to research on

You poor thing i know how it feels your at the top of the ladder in your company and what to do next?
I was in retail and like you i wanted a complete change I tried job centres local papers but nothing however. You will be glad to know i no longer in the same company i left 7 years ago when i went on holiday i was offered a job working for a holiday company, I accepted worked for them a year then remained in the country I am now working in a travel and car hire company and I'm loving it. The message is to stay where you are and soon in enough the perfect job will come when it does throw caution to the wind and go for it!!! Best of Luck

Eh I really don't think your going to get a job like that. Unfortunatly you have pretty much secured yourself in a career sector. Your in retail right now and you should stick to it. What I would suggest is just finding a new place to work in that field. Retail is pretty varied to tell you the truth.
Human resource people can get pretty wierd when they see you are totally switching fields after a long period of time. I guess they think that once you have done somthing for so long that your really not going to be able to do anything else. It is unfair I know, but rarely does my company ever hire people for our office that has established themselves in a career field. I remember one guy was a car salesman for 12 years and he came to our shipping dept looking for a job. The woman who did our hiring told me flat out that she just didn't understand why people did that, and he wasn't going to get the job.

Go to your County probate office and spend a day tracing back the history of a house or piece of property in your neighborhood. The clerks there will get you started if you have a specific property in mind. If you enjoy your day, write nice business letters to the title search companies in your area asking for a job. No degree necessary. The pros I saw were just folks with time on their hands, making extra money.

If you are interested in archives, you will most likely need to obtain a Master's degree in Library and Information Science, commonly referred to as an MLIS. Beyond this, you will probably need to obtain a Graduate Certificate in Archival Administration.

"Research" of these industries would be your best bet because their are numerous career choices you can make.
To put you in the right direction, you would need to go to a college or university and obtain a degree. This way you could speak to an adviser about your career aspirations.

You might think about being a paralegal or legal clerk or land/title person for an oil field company. All of these would require that you do quite a bit of researching.
