Normally, it is a multiple of 1024.
HOWEVER, some manufacturers (hard drives especially) are now using a multiple of 1000, not 1024. So, now, if you buy a 50 Gb hard drive, you'll get 50,000,000 KB, NOT, 52,428,800 KB...
It doesn't look like much, but you're actually loosing 5% disk space just by the way they calculate it...

exactly 1024 kb are in in a mb. And 1024 in a gig

2^10 bytes are in a kilobyte (that's 1024 for non binary speakers)
2^20 bytes are in a megabyte (1024 kilobytes)
2^30 bytes are in a gigabyte (1024 megabytes).
Anyone that gives you a base 10 number is either ignorant or works for a hard drive company.
