I have heard that pouring white wine on a red wine stained carpet helps to remove the color of the red wine.
Otherwise, try gentle blotting, don't let it set and get dry. Pour on fizzy water....club soda or get a spray carpet cleaner in a can for $4.

Regular white vinegar works very well for this purpose. First dab up the liquid with a towel or paper towel (do NOT press very hard or push the wine around, just dab). Then put some vinegar on it Let it sit for a couple minutes and dab up again. repeat as needed.

Just mop it up before it gets into the fibres.
Then use cold salt water on an absorbant cloth

There's this stuff, even if you don't have kids, called "Totally Toddler". It gets out ANYTHING....tomato sauce stains, vomit, baby formula, urine, fecal matter, blood, wine, etc. You can find it in the baby section at Kmart, Babies 'R Us, or online at www.totallytoddler.com
