I know how to protect the strip, but needing a new card every six months because of a dodgy chip is getting annoying.

Take precautions against static electricity, especially when you open the box or handle the chip. Mild static damage can ruin miniature electronics like chips easily. If you felt the shock, it was probably enough to ruin it right away, more mild damage should show up within six months.

You've probably learned the static rules, then forgotten bits. I know I have. Here's a refresher. http://www.webopedia.com/DidYouKnow/Computer_Science/2002/static.asp

static electricity created when you rub with other surfaces damages the chip inside just like it will damage computer equipment, i reccomend that you try to keep your fingers away from the contacts on your card and keep the card away from sorces of static/magnets like CRT monitors and loud speaker systems
