I absolutely do believe that high schoolers should be required to complete a certain amount of community service in order to graduate.
I think that there is a tendency for teenagers to be much more self absorbed than they should be...This doesn't make them bad people, but I think it's very healthy to learn/remember that everyone else on this planet is human and has needs also. Additionally, as adults, we all need to be taking part in the world around us, and learning how to do so when you still have the opportunity to look to other adults for help is a bonus.
The high school in our home town has a community service requirement...60 hours over four years in order to graduate. There are community service clubs on campus (Key Club, Red Cross Club, etc.), that allow for the kids to connect with other kids who are doing the same, and to work together to accomplish goals. Additionally, as many of these are national/international organizations, this can also teach them about how to work with large groups, much like a big corporation.
The only reason that I would agree that this is not a good idea, would be that this potentially takes away from a student's ability to complete their homework...however, considering that each student has the whole year in which to earn their hours, I don't find this to be a really compelling argument. Additionally, I would expect that each school should provide the option to waive this requirement, based on the individual student's needs.

I think it is a great idea because it will help students realize that what they do can help more than just theirselves and their families. Community service is a big deal to many colleges and companies and it will be a great start for them. They can decide what is important to them and place they would to do assist.
It would be a bad idea because if someone did not want to do it and they were sent somewhere to help people, they could give the organization a very bad name or people would think all volunteers were like that.

No. I don't think it should be required. Of course volunteering in itself is an awesome thing. But I know for me especially I work 40 hours every week on top of school and on top of sports and homework. If I had to shove anything else onto my schedule I'd probably burst. It's nice for people who have time, but not everyone does. And also for younger high school kids who don't have their driver's license, it could be very hard to find transportation if they have working parents. However, as an alternative, I think it would be cool if the school took 1 day off once a year and sent the kids on a "field trip" during school hours to volunteer somewhere.

I think that would be fantastic! They could learn so many things. Get a taste of the real life. On the other hand, would kids just try and "breeze" through it? See it as a way of not going to class? We do not want the youth of America to be out there mixing with the public and not giving a darn-oops! They already do it, don't they? I am for it. Good idea!

They already have to do that here. They didn't when I was in school but my nephew has to complete a certain amount of hours in order to graduate. I think its a good thing...teaches them to be less greedy like most kids now-a-days are.

Good idea. The education system is supposed to churn out well-rounded citizens. How can they be well rounded if they don't know how to help others and their community? It gives them a good start on giving back to society, and also helps them learn how to make do for themselves.

No because most jobs in the "real world" do not require community service, and high school should be preparing you for the "real world."
