You are right, the theory being; once they begin to pick sides their allegiance to the commander in chief might be altered or diminished.
But the military can't win that fight due to the freedom of choice thing we have going on.
How a soldier feels politically, is a good question. When I was a soldier, I would have based my feelings on the way I was fed that day. Or perhaps, how rude my platoon leader was!

When family members come home from Iraq they are so proud of what they have accomplished, they talk for days. My ex husband didn't even know that so many American people thought we weren't making a difference. He became very fond of the Iraqi people and he felt very wanted by the Iraqi people.

That's why I'm always shaking my heads when neocons say "the soldiers never say anything bad about Bush or Rummy."
THEY CAN'T. Those are their commanding officers. The fact the aren't saying anything bad about them doesn't mean they have the soldiers full support. It just means they are being disciplined and respecting the command structure.

Actually the DNC loves to twist the truth about our military!!!! Example; John Kerry. As a former Marine my politics did not interfere with my job!!!!And anyone who let's it is well let's just say "causing trouble" and not doing his/her job by VOLUNTEERING to protect and defend our great nation!!!!!!!!!!

That does not mean they can not talk to family and friends. I know the DNC would love to keep them quite but sorry they are talking and we are hearing the truth the press will not say.

I can tell you what my guess about the political leanings of soldiers would be, and that I base it on seven years of active duty.
Service members are basically forced to deal with reality. They don't have the option of hiring an image consultant or marketing strategist or issuing a press release to alter public perceptions, and thereby changing reality. They deal with real things that don't care about the latest public opinion polls.
Given that, my guess is that very few of them are liberals.
