I know we are dealing we huge "what ifs" here. I am just reading and learning the details of this period of history and it is endlessly fascinating.

Mary Queen of Scots non-relationship with James I (or VI depending on your time period), Jame's supposed homosexual leanings, the whole Guy Fawkes thing....

So, while hypothetical questions maybe have no place in history...I'm asking it anyway. Would England have reverted back to Catholism? Seems like many people were comfortable in their "new" faith.

Charles the first probably would never have been King? What do you think?

Thanks for any insights you can offer!

Initially chaos. Most of those with any idea of what was really going on or had the power to affect anything would probably have been killed. Thereafter... my view is that they would somehow have found a King/ Queen and junior branches of the usual families would quickly have "got their acts together". Out away from London, little change would have actually occurred.

England would rally more against Catholicism if Fawkes wasn't caught. Nationalism prevails over religion.
