I don't want to have to subscribe to a service. Is there a product I can buy that works like Tvoe? I would be happy just to record TV programs. Does a DVR recorder do a function like this?

Most cable companies and sattelite companies offer DVR's which have many of the same functions as TIVO. They do charge extra though every month. Usually about half of TIVO's monthly charge.

I know what you mean about hating subscriptions, but TIVO's service is SO MUCH BETTER! It's really worth the difference in cost to me.

TIVO.com offen will give you the recorder for free if you subscribe. you might want to check it out. see link below

Yes its do able. Yoiu have I think THREE options

One buy a good DVR

TWO
Amazon.com: SnapStream Beyond TV 3: Television Without Limits ...I use this program to pause and record Live TV and all the cool things that TiVO does without the monthly fees. Plus, at the Snapstream website, ...
www.amazon.com/SnapStream-Beyond-TV-Television-Without/dp/B00022I1FC

THREE

You need a large hard drive
a cable to connect the pc to tv
a software program to play the recordings
a subscription to cable -not satellite- tv
a usb tv tuner

You will then be watching TV shows on the PC not the TV

in case you reside interior the united kingdom, freeview+ supplies packing bins with stay pause, rewind and record. they simply value approximately £80 for a respectable one, with HDMI port and approximately 320GB of garage out of Asda/Tesco. Then there is not any subscription charge.
