In Japan, moths are considered in some areas to be incarnations of our ancestors. I tried to get one out of my flat once and my Japanese friend told me to leave it alone because it was watching over me. My experience has been that spirits of loved ones can visit us by manipulating or imitating natural things like butterflies, moths, birds, etc.
Usually if this is the case something about the creature makes someone just kind of pop into your head.
The last time I visited my grandmother a huge butterfly sat outside her window the entire time like it was listening to us. Its shape reminded me of my mother and I felt that my mother was there with us. My grandmother passed a few months later, I think my mom was there for her. (grandma was 91).

I've also had a bird that liked to tap on the window while I was reading like it wanted to say "hello".
