Abraham Lincoln died in April, 1865 after being shot in the head by assassin John Wilkes Booth. He and his wife were at a performance of "Our American Cousin" at Ford's Theatre, in Washington, DC. Booth was an actor and Southern sympathizer who blamed Lincoln for starting the Civil War and the subsequent downfall of the South.
