I really hate it when people tell pre-meds to major in pre-med...
You can do ANY major and be eligible for medical school as long as you complete the medical prequisite coursework.
Baccalaureate coursework must include:
1 year general chem (with lab)
1 year organic chem (with lab)
1 year general biology (with lab)
1 year intro. physics (with lab)
1 year English
1 year calculus
Suggested coursework includes: psychology, statistics, biochemistry, humanities
The trick is to NOT major in biology. Biology major pre-meds are a dime a dozen, and they will be your stiffest competition for A's. You want A's. To get them, become a HUMANITIES major, ace the easy fluffy stuff, then focus your power on the prereqs. You'll graduate with a higher GPA, and not suffer from much of the stress the rest of us feel when we're up against 400 bio majors with the same goal of topping the curve. I was a molecular biology major, and it singlehandedly ruined my chances of getting into medical school.
So, you should shoot for 3.5+ GPA (and as many A's as you can manage in your science classes). Also, volunteer with organizations that help or advocate for children such as schools, nurseries, CASA for Kids, etc. Extracurricular activities count for a lot! In your third year, you take the MCAT. Score straight 10s or better in all categories (30+ total score out of 45). Spend 4th year applying and interviewing.

Pre Med is not a major. It's a curriculum designed to prepare you for the MCAT. I would suggest taking a major that you have interest in, besides medicine, and taking the two years of biology, two years of chemistry, one year of physics and calculus as your electives. This way, if you don't make the cut for Med school, you have a degree in something you like.

You need to take all the prerequisites for premed. Some colleges have a premed major; at others, you must choose your major. The most common choices for premed majors are biology and chemistry, but for most medical schools you can major in anything you want to as long as you take the premed requirements in biology, chemistry, math, etc.
I know students who have even gone to medical school with a major in religion, but you should be careful to check with the med school you are considering attending about their requirements for admission. They can vary from institution to institution.

pre-med is never really a major, but rather a concentration. It doesn't really matter what you end up majoring in, as long as you complete the requirements. Many people do something like major in business and still complete the pre med coursework.

most pre-med folks end up majoring in biology, because most of the required classes overlap into biology. if you want to go to med school you need to talk to someone at your college about the pre-med program -- there are specific classes you have to take before a med school will consider your application (certain math, chemistry, bio, etc.)

My dad is a doctor, and he once told me the secret to getting into Medical school is as easy as 1.2.3.
1. Find the Med School that you want to go to. University of Washington has an excellent one.
2. Find the Undergrad school that has the highest rate of getting it's students into THAT med school. Whitworth in spokane actually has the best track record for getting it's students into UW's med program.
3. Work with your advisor's at the undergrad school on getting you into Med. school.
