The rule of thumb is:

When you are having sex, see a GYN. If your Pap-test is clear, you can miss like 2 years...otherwise you are supposed to have one every year.

If you are already having sex, it won't be a big deal for you. The exam is short and to the point.

It's not your dr's job to send you to an OB/GYN. But if your dr is performing yearly physicals on you and checking out your reproductive organs and scanning you for STD's then there is no reason to need to see an actual OB/GYN. If you get preggo you will have to find one. But for now as long as your doc is caring for you in that aspect you should be fine. Ask your dr to refer you to one or to suggest one to you if you are not being cared for in that way.
I see where you added so I will answer again here:
Your dr. should not have you on birth control if he has never done an exam before. You should ask him asap to help you find a gyn that will accept you in, see if he suggests anyone and you should get in as soon as possible. Anyone who is sexually active or is of age to be sexually active (if you have had a period) should be going to a gyn dr. once a year for a full pelvic exam. Not only could you have contracted an STD and not know it but you could have cervical cancer. I have a few abnormal cells that they keep watch over and check every year for growth. So far so good but I would never miss my yearly exam for fear of death. If you have had more than one sexual partner I would be definitely concerned that your reproductive organ health should be checked out. Check for a local planned parenthood and give them a call to set up a new patient exam. Also if you are low income they can give you a 3 month supply of pills on a donation basis. Maybe you can give them $10 one time and $40 the next- whatever you can afford.

I assume your regular doctor does gyno exams on you(pap smear, etc) If he's doing that, then you are fine. You don't need to see the specialist at that point. You should have a pap done every year.

I am 38 and my general MD always did mine until I wanted to go to gynocologist. Its not a big deal and if your paps come back normal, I wouldnt worry. If you want to go to a gyno because they understand the female body better, that would be understandable, but until you have issues-dont sweat it.

it's not BAD, but you should go.
the rule i know is when you start having sex, or when you turn 18, whatever comes first.
there are gyno. clinics you can go to which are cheaper, if that's why you haven't gone.
look in the phone book for a place near you, or call your county health clinic and see if they can give you more options.

It is important to have your... Gina.. as I affectionally call her.. haha checked. If you havent expirenced problems , that is a plus.. but there are many STD's that do not have symptoms. Some infections can make you loose your ability to ever have children. It is important to check with a GYNO once a year.. hence the ANNUAL name for the appointment... would you keep driving your car forever... with out ever getting it checked. Its a good habit to get into and .. you can know that you are disease FREE!!!

Yes. When you're on birth control and having sex, you should be seeing a Gyn for checkups and monitoring. Your doctor is also bad and you should switch to another one.

Are you having yearly pap smears? You should be, and if not, schedule one immediately. A pap smear is the only way to test for cervical cancer.
