Nowerdays I don't really drink. When I was a heavy drinker I used to start drinkig just after breakfast if I had any booze in my flat, otherwise around 11:05 just after the bars/ off liscences opened. There would always be a few other hardcore drinkers who were well on their way to drunkeness even that early.
My good friends Clair and Rich who both manage Threshers stores have often mentioned people starting drinking at 3 or 4 pm on friday as soon as work is over for the week.
Looking around Harrogate a lot of people start drinking as soon as they finish work - out of the office and into the pub. I guess the weekend starts early in Yorkshire. The Claro Beagle (a local pub of mine) is usually packed with drinkers when I go in there for a cheap meal on friday.
I think it is becoming increasingly socially acceptable for younger people to start getting drunk earlier and earlier in the day. I can't really say this is wrong as I did it and I try to avoid the "do as I saw and not as I do" attitude that a lot of people exhibit but I can certainly say it is not commendable.
It is still a fact that many young people are impressed with heavy drinking and excessive drinking. Many people these days consider drinking 12 pints admirable... when in fact it is just expensive. I once drank 32 pints, 2 bottles of wine and a bottle of navy rum over a day (nearly died and spent a 2 days in bed with alcohol poisoning) and I think that people should be disgusted with me for doing that - it's not clever to drink in morbid excess...

... now I am ranting on... oh dear...

Anyway yes. People do drink earlier on fridays, perhaps too early and I am glad I am not one of those people any more.

Some never quit from Thursday. Others start as soon as they get up on Friday, but most start sometime around when they get off work (round 1) and then go back later for the rest (rounds 2-?)

I've had my morning mead with breakfast, and an ale with lunch, might have a port with dinner, and a nightcap of cognac. It's pretty much a daily routine with me.
