We find "Boxer" turtles on my property all of the time. I have a turtle, don't know his genus, found him when he was a hatchling -- miles from water, still in half a shell. Now three years later, the boy loves the water. Prefers swimming rather than staying on dry land. His feet aren't nearly as webbed as I would expect for an amphib., but, this is what he likes. He's always lived in captivity, I suspect my future grand kids will someday inherit a turtle.

Turtles are reptiles of the order Testudines (all living turtles belong to the crown group Chelonia), most of whose body is shielded by a special bony or cartilagenous shell developed from their ribs. The Order Testudines includes both extant (living) and extinct species, the earliest turtles being known from the early Triassic Period, making turtles one of the oldest reptile groups, and a much more ancient group than the lizards and snakes. About 300 species are alive today. Some species of turtles are highly endangered. Like birds, turtles are able to detect the Earth's magnetic field with magnetosensors, which allow them to migrate.

Depends on what type of turtle. (no they do NOT live in their shell. -- my tortoise never goes into his shell)
I have a Russian Tortoise and it's natural habitat would be in russia. ... there are some sea turtles and they all over the seas.
It really depends on the turtle type
