The cable that plugs into a phone jack has a RJ-11 connector which is smaller than the computer cable which has a RJ-45 connector so they are not compatible. To go wireless you run a RJ-45 cable from your DSL box to a wireless router and put wireless cards in all your computers. To answer your first question:

Ethernet is a large and diverse family of frame-based computer networking technologies for local area networks (LANs). The name comes from the physical concept of the ether. It defines a number of wiring and signaling standards for the physical layer, two means of network access at the Media Access Control (MAC)/Data Link Layer, and a common addressing format.
Ethernet has been standardized as IEEE 802.3. Its star-topology, twisted pair wiring form became the most widespread LAN technology in use from the 1990s to the present, largely replacing competing LAN standards such as coaxial cable Ethernet, token ring, FDDI, and ARCNET. In recent years, Wi-Fi, the wireless LAN standardized by IEEE 802.11, has been used in addition to or instead of Ethernet in many installations.
Good Luck.

You use a standard phone cable to connect from the phone jack in your home to your DSL modem. From there, a cable comes out with a similiar connector to the RJ-11 on a phone cord, but this one is bigger, called an RJ-45, and is referred to by its type which is typically CAT-5. The CAT-5 cable is what is used for ethernet technology. In order to network the computers in your house, you can connect the CAT5 from the DSL Modem to your router, and then you should have extra ports on the back of the router to connect more CAT5 cables. These cables can be ran to each of the rooms you wish to have internet in. Check out this picture for a better understanding of the topology I am describing:

get it to work on one computer. i imagine the instructions you got with DSL are more than sufficient.

wireless routers are very cheap. $30 i believe. (another $30 or so for each reciever)
if you don't use wireless prepare to run wired cable through your house (through a router). theres is a connection from phone jack to dsl modem. from dsl modem to your router. you will attach an ethernet cable from router to your computer. if you don't use wirless you have to do this to every computer.
