If you can get away with not paying your workers you will be wealthy. It is an investment, albeit an immoral one.

The south relied on slave labor out of need. The northern states were beginning to industrialize, whilst the south kept with the Agrarian america. At one point, American cotton was a worldwide item that everyone needed. After the cotton gin, even more so, because that way they could get more work out of slave labor while the African export trade closed off in the early 1800s.

It was money and economy, for the most part. Does this help any? You might also want to look up Hamilton and Jackson economies. Industry vs. The Common Man. It has alot to do with the keeping of southern slaves in places such as SC/GA/across those lines.

Money, of course, is a big part of it, but from a practical standpoint, the crops grown in SC were labor intense and those working in the fields needed to be accustomed to very warm temperatures. It was *not* so much about raising enough food (population levels were still rather low), but about raising enough to harvest and ship abroad (cotton, indigo, etc) for profit.
Many hands were needed to do this, and most Africans were accustomed to very warm temperatures (or so it was thought at the time)
