It's not that deli meat itself is bad. The reason they suggest avoiding deli meat is the risk of a bacteria called Listeria, that will easily cross the placenta and can be fatal to a fetus. The odds of actually getting it is VERY low in the US. This is the same bacteria that caused the recall of spinach a couple of months ago.
I've eaten at Subway dozens of times during my pregnancy (I'm 37 weeks now). Had it just last night actually. The odds are VERY low.

It's because of the bacteria that can grow on the meat. Deli meat tends to make them grow fast and some deli's don't clean their slicer that well. For normal humans the body can fight better than when you are pregnant.

because there is a chance that there is bacteria in it i believe it's listteria which cna make you sick. I asked my dr about this and he said that i can eat deli meat just when ordering it ask for it to be cut fresh since you dont know how long the meats have been sitiing our for. He aslo said that the pre packaged kind is ok because that is pre inspected, but i like the fresh stuff. I avoided it during my first trimester but now i pretty much say whatever and eat it and so far me and my baby are completly healthy.

GERMS and VIRUSES.
Quite often deli meat is old and not quite "fresh". There are various bacteria that live on the meat, slicers, packaging, etc. It is often not handled properly. Plus, much of it is loaded with sodium and preservatives. You do NOT want to be feeding this to you baby!

Deli meat is bad for you even when you're not pregnant. It's fatty, greasy and just plain not healthy. Just go buy a ham or something, not the deli meat crap

I'd never heard that...but if there is a concern, I bet it's because of nitrates and salt. You retain enough water when you're pregnant...imagine what a high dose of salt will do for your ankles!

i cant imagine there is anything wrong with it, unless it's old and has salmonella or something. I think you're fine.
