You dont say what size your harddrive is but it doesn't sound like it may be very large. Some ideas are to remove any programs and files you dont need including photos and other personal files. Or try this.
One should do a disk cleanup everyday and defrag two or three times a week if the computer is used moderately. This may take awile if you have never defragged. Try this.
You may need to do a Disk Cleanup..and be sure you have all the boxes checked....
Defrafg your C drive or what ever is your
main harddrive... Make sure you have selected the C Drive.... This is called a Disk Defragmenter...
Go to : Start...
programs..
accessories...
system tools..
Do this often...
Try the System Restore which takes you back to a time when your computer was working good. Go To:
start
programs
accessories
systems tools
system restore
This process is completely reversable. And does not remove your personal files. Just go back one checkpoint at a time until your puter is working good again.

Your issues is computer maintenance.
Go to START, My Computer, the C drive (C:\)
Click on Documents and settings, Click on the menu tab TOOLS.
Folder Options, View, Click on Show Hidden Files & Folders
Check Hide Protrected Operating system files
Open your profile folder, Open the Cookies folder and delete all entries. open Local Settings folder. Open Temporary Internet files folder, delete ALL entries, open temp folder, delete all entries
Open recent folder, delete all entries, Open history folder delete any entries that have week day names or is named TODAY.
close it all down. Go to C:\windows. Look for the folder TEMP
Open that folder and delete all entries. Some it will not delete (3)
do not worry, delete all else.
On your desk top empty your recycle Bin.
Defrag your hard drive. Try www.diskeeper.com to see if they have a trial version.
Buy on line 'FIX-IT Utilities Professional" Down load it and run it.
Run the registry editor. Check all the red and yellow dot entries that it shows and delete them, then run the program, re un it until it tells you that it has found no more errors.

It may have some spyware on it. Either try ewido anti-spyware (ewido.net) or Trend Micro's AntiSpyware (http://www.trendmicro.com/en/products/desktop/as/evaluate/overview.htm). Both are proven to eliminate spyware and adware. my suggestion would be Trend Micro AntiSpyware since it uses lees resources.
