I think you might not know what the word "absolute" means, because republicans certainly have not, never have, and never will have absolute power. To even get close to that they would need at least 60 seats in the US Senate, and a strong conservative majority on the US Supreme court, as well as on the federal circuit of appeals.
I can assure you that the reason the partial birth abortion ban isn't the law of the land isn't because republicans stopped it.

No one has "absolute" power in Washington. Not Bush, not a majority Congress or Senate either. The thing is that there are many Republicans who are pro-choice, just as there are many Democrats who are pro-life. It really is a mixed bag, the stands on this issue aren't divided strictly under party lines. So even if there were "absolute" power it wouldn't guarantee a victory for the pro-life side of the issue. I guess you'll just have to be patient, partial-birth abortion is still under debate. As far as banning abortion altogether? It's never going to happen.

i dont know of many republicans that want just a ban on partial birth abortions. They want to make it as hard as possible for a woman to have an abortion, period. They got the law passed to require a 24 "think it over" period before you are allowed to get an abortion. Now, in order to get an abortion, they must give you all this information, and tell you things you may not want to know or hear, and then you must wait 24 hours after them giving you this information...and you must be 18. at least in my state.

This is an issue the Rep's use to capture their "base", and if it becomes a non issue, they will have 1 less tool to manipulate them with. They have had 6 years, and gotten basically NOWHERE on something that, in the last Presidential election, was one of their key points!
I will futher state that I doubt they really want abortoin to be illegal when you consider the financial ramifications of over a million new people born each year--how many public schools need to be built, how many hospitals, judges, social workers, etc would be needed to handle that many (hopefully) adoptions...they tell women to think of the consequences of their actions, but how about the consequence of that action? I'm not saying that';s a reason to keep abortion going, all I am saying is that that's a reality we must plan for.

Congress passed & Bush signed a ban on partial birth abortions. Judges have overturned it. To the best of my knowledge, it is still meandering through the courts.
Reps never had absolute power. There were always enough Dems to filibuster in the Senate.

Due to the political pressure on this topic, no actual progress will ever be made on it. Its makes for good sound bites to scare people into believing it is going to go away and makes for some good scare tactics. However this will require a constitutional amendment to ban and I don't see this happening in my lifetime.

This is properly a State's rights question, until the Supreme Court gets another shot at it.
Many Republicans, particularly pro-life Christians agree with you. It is a misunderstanding of how our government works, and I think unfortunate, as it allows politicians to mislead with issues they cannot follow through on.

this is simply a "wedge issue" they use to get votes. If it was really important to them, their party , and America, wouldn't someone introduce an amendment to the Constitution banning abortions. It probably wouldn't pass, but they don't even try. It is not that important to them. Only the votes are important.

"Stupid ineffective abstinence programs" do not prevent abortions nor does outlawing them.
Is bashing Republicans your best defense?

This is a matter best left to a conscience vote.
You will never get a consensus.
