Personally, I think electrons exist in more than 3 dimensions. They flash in and out of our three dimensional existence as matter quite often. I think that if we had the necessary means of sensing all of the universe's dimensions, we would see matter and energy as "obviously" the same thing instead of "conceptually" the same thing.
