If you choose to live north, but you will pay a pretty good chunk of change will be River North, Wrigleyville, Lakeview, and Edgewater. Suburb that's next to Chicago is Evanston. Going west you have the River West and West Lincoln Park area. Suburb from the west is Oak Park. Going south you have Bronzeville, Bridgeport, Canaryville, Englewood(I wouldnt recommend it) and Auburn/Chatham....burb to the south is Evergreen Park. It also depends on what you can afford to pay in rent, but if you option to have roommates split the cost of a place make sure you screen them through a reputable roommate finder service so you don't get stuck with people who will shyst you on the rent and are good about not damaging the place so you're not held accountable for what they do plus you want roommates you can trust who won't steal from you and are associating themselves with people who respect other folks houses. Average rent in Chicago ranges from 450-900, but the most I've seen regular people pay is 675-1100 a month. Go on Google and locate apartment finders and a reputable roommate service because you're better off letting a professional help you out with finding the best place for your money.

Depends on whether you're going to be working in the city or not. If you don't mind commuting by driving or taking a Metra every day for about 45 minutes, there are a bunch of suburbs that are OK. But if you want to be able to just get up and jump on the train or bus to get to work downtown or whereever in a few minutes, there there are places in the city that are pretty nice. I personally suggest Edgwater (no it's not as expensive as someone else said). You can find a one bedroom there for as low as $650, which is pretty cheap. It's only a couple of blocks from the lake, which is great in the summertime. There are a bunch of new restaurants and bookstores, etc. opening up there. There are also a lot of condos being built, so it's best to make that movfe as soon as you can before the whole thing goes condo. It's close to public transportation (el train and buses). Parking is a bit tight but a lot of buildings have attached parking lots or garages. The types of apartments range from five story modest buildings to 30 story condos on Sheridan Road. There are also a few nice houses for sale. There are a few cool bars, theaters and clubs nearby (The Green Mill Jazz Club, the Annoyance theater, Hopleaf Bar, all of which have info on the web) and the Rivera and Aragon theaters, which host most of the major musical acts in the country, are nearby. Ethnically-speaking, it's a very diverse community: white, black, Latino, Indian (both kinds), Asian, gay, straight, you name it...

Well it really depends on how much money you want to spend, and what color you are, although people say that Chicago is so diverse, and yes it is, however, the neighborhoods are not diverse, you could thank our first mayor daley for that one, anyway if you have money Lincoln Park, Lakeview, wrigleyville, if you are tight on cash you could still live in a nice neighborhood for nine hundred dollars on average cheaper, like albany park, lincoln square, if you like the suburbs I like skokie, highland park, naperville, orland park, good luck

i think evanston is a good place to live just cause it's right in between suburbs and the city. there are a lot of 21-35 year old range around evanston and a lot of restaurant, bookstores, theater, and whatever all right there. the train station is close by and you're also close to the lake. so it all kinda works out.

people say evanston is the best place to live. but this is so if you got a lot of money to buy a home for 1 mil. i would not recommend you the city. it is unattractive. either live in downtown to be close to everything or buy a nice house in evanston.
