In years gone by it was used for transporting water from one place to another. I think they might still use it this way, but it now has to compete with other forms of transport.

The Nile River was a perfect place to establish a settlement because it provided a consistent, predictable flood schedule. Because the Egyptians knew when the Nile would flood, they could create excellent agriculture. It was also a route from the Mediterranean Sea. Short answer; fresh water.

IrrIgation and navigation; additionally since the river contained fresh water, it permitted the gathering of large numbers of people who formed cities along its banks. Without the Nile River, we would not have had the Egyptian civilization.

oh wow it was everything! have you ever looked at a picture of egypt? there is always a huge contrast of desert and greenery right next to each other! because as soon as the nile ended so did plant life or any life for that matter it was their one and only source of water! life revolved around the nile!

Seasonal innundation (flooding) fertilized the crop zone (Agriculture.) Papyrus grew along it (source of paper, weaving material, material for boats = Commerce), fish and hippopotami lived in it (Food), boats traveled on it (Transportation.) And I'm sure the people drank, bathed, and washed clothes in it.
