The department of agriculture says NO. Leave the old nest as it is. It will draw new birds to nest there, and they will clean out the old nest and rebuild using the bare bone of the old one. Cleaning it out will sometimes result in leaving your smell, and birds won't build where they smell humans

Yes and it wouldn't hurt to hose it out too, if possible.

Clean it out after each nesting. I don't care what the dept of agriculture says. The only bird I know who will build a nest over the top of another is the house sparrow which is non-native and a real nuisance. My bluebirds wait until I have cleaned out their box before they start another brood.

Yes! Do it outside. Then disinfect it! Most birds have lice! Hence the need for bird-baths! ;-)=

yes - because last years will have loads of bacteria in it and you might not get any birds coming back.

Wow, What great answers... I haven't cleaned mine out since we moved here. Does anyone know when is the best time? Surely before spring. Thanks for all the help.
