I've had it done with both and in my case the tech got it right and could easily show me so I could tell without a doubt and the OB said "I'm not really sure but I think..." He was right too, but just not as sure. My tech said in the past ten years she has only gotten one wrong and that was on triplets (Hard ot see what all three are!)
On my last I got a 4-D and it was crystal clear that he was a boy. They did it for free because they had a trial with the machine to see if they were going to purchase it and I was lucky enough to be one they tested it on.
They will probably give you another ultrasound in a few weeks and be able to tell you for sure. Until then keep your receipts and buy yellow!
A couple more things I just wanted to add - my first son we could tell at 15 weeks and my sister was told at 21 weeks she was having a boy and ended up with a girl. Her OB said boy, the tech said he probably saw a hand in that area. Girls 'lips' are a easy to see as male parts if they get in the right position. I could see them on my twin girls 5 years ago and the machines today are much clearer than that one was. Ask if they can show you the genitals - you would probably even be able to tell for yourself.

The techinicians are more experienced. Generally the technician only gives the OB a report of ultrasound findings and a few printed pictures, and the OB just goes by the report.
When you have an MRI the orthopaedic surgeon, for example, doesn't read the MRI, a different doctor does and sends a report to your Dr. Same kind of deal.
Edited to add: I saw my son's bits on ultrasound at 16, 20, 29, and 36 weeks. My OB's equipment is brand new (has the 3d/4d capabilities) and it was VERY clear on all 4 u/s's that we're having a boy. There was NO doubt, even at 16 weeks. The 16 week u/s was a "free sex check" scan that my OB asked me did I want.

Closer to 19 weeks is the best time to tell, so I'd go with the "tech." Try suggesting another ultrasound and if you get one, ask them to explain why they are guessing the gender they said. Ask them to show you the genitals. I had 2 ultrasounds with my first pregnancy and the first time they said a boy and the second time (at 19 weeks) they said a girl...it was a girl.

I would say the ultrasound tech because they do it everyday for a living. A boy is easy to spot. I'm pregnant with a boy and as soon as the machine was on my stomach there was no mistake. The lady knew what it was 2 seconds later. I would go for a 3d or 4d ultrasound to get a definite answer. i think they are about 150.00 or so. I would also consult the doctor and let them know your concerns Good luck

The ultrasound tech has more training in reading a ultrasound. But anyone can make a mistake when it comes to telling the sex of the baby.As long as they both agree that the baby is growing healthy then who cares what it is.

huh there never is a 100% guarantee either way. My mom is a ultrasound tech I'd say because they see more ultrasounds on a daily they would know. Also if the ob did one early then the tech I'd trust the tech more because things are not well formed till later on. either way you never do 100% know.

Neither, theyre both trained to read the scans, a doctor sees more results from birth, but the tech does it daily..
At 17 weeks its hard to tell the difference between the penis and the female organs, and the lips from the testicals. Its not until those things become more developed (about 18-20 weeks) that someone could get a better reading.
If you actually google ultrasound pictures of boys and girl and read them yourself, you can see how similar they look, especially early on.
I'd go with a girl, since thats what was read at the farthest point of development.

Hmm - I'm sort of patchy - sometimes I will have a flash of great insight into a person, but mostly I'm betrayed by my own basic desire to trust and be trusted, and I don't easily see the bad in people. OK - I know that's a characteristic better suited to an alien on a nature studies trip. I've always found women to be better at judging other women than I am, and I usually try to avoid making hasty judgements about men, and prefer to wait until the jury is in.

Sex is determined by the presence of two tiny spheres. If they were seen in the first ultrasound, you must be having a boy - presumably they were obscured from sight by the position of the unborn child, in the second ultrasound.
