yes you are cheating when playing go fish you are trying to get rid of the cards in your own hand so in turn you must ask for a card that is in your hand and if the opposing player doesn't have the card you are asking for you have to pick another from the deck
come on most people learn how to play this game when they are like 3 years old?

From my memory you did not cheat it does not say that you have to have the card. It is however been such a commom practice to the game to ask for the cards in your hand. Kind of a strange strategy however it would also let you accumulate cards faster to go out. I say no you did not cheat!

I thought the object of the game was to ask for the card you have in your hand and if you don't then that's GO Fish but what do I know.

In go-fish, you have to have the card you are asking for. It doesn't seem that strategic that way, but it is a game for children ya know...have to make it easy. Unless you and your wife want to make your own rules, you have to go with the official rules. Nice question by the way...LOL!

It actually does state in the rules that you must have the card you ask for.......
Gameplay
Randomly choose a player to go first.
On your turn, ask a player for a specific card rank. For example: "Barb, please give me your 9s." You must already hold at least one card of the requested rank.
If the player you ask has any cards of the requested rank, she must give all of her cards of that rank to you. In the example, Barb would have to give you all of her 9s.
If you get one or more cards from the player you ask, you get another turn.

If you are questioning your actions they are probably not on the up and up. Be honest with yourself. Only you and your wife know the boundaries of your relationship.

Why don't you read the directions? That's the best way to show her you are right.
