Nikola Tesla was ahead of his time and has to be one of the best pure scientific minds of all time. A big reason why he doesn't get more shine is because of his eccentricities. He was asexual, wouldn't clean himself, and didn't really care for academia. He viewed science as art, rather than as a discipline or as something to be studied. He was also cheated out of credit for many of his discoveries by other scientists. Thomas Edison was also among those who screwed Tesla out due credit and money. Tesla was a rival of Edison's and likely was a better scientist. Edison had more patents, but Tesla had him in terms of scientific acumen. History is only now giving Tesla is due.

Because he was also a little crazy, and not that interested in practical devices. Most of what he did actually had little practical benefit. He spent a lot of time on things like trying to beam large amounts of power through the air without wires.

He was really smart and he had some fine ideas. But Edison and Marconi, less smart and with fewer big ideas, did the hard, grind it out work to make practical things that revolutionized the world. For example, Edison tried many many things that didn't work before he invented a practical way to make a light bulb. It was persistence that got him success, not genius. And we're all better off for it.

Tesla was a genius, but he was also antisocial and could apparently be kind of a jerk. Both Edison & Marconi were far better at selling themselves. As were Henry Ford and George Westinghouse, who both also share a little of the blame for Tesla's relative obscurity...
