As noted above, James Buchanan was the only President who never married. However, several others weren't married during part or all of their Presidential terms. These included:

- Thomas Jefferson - his wife Martha had died in 1782.
- Andrew Jackson - his wife Rachel died in 1828, after a month after he was elected but before he was inaugurated.
- Martin Van Buren - wife Hannah died in 1819
- John Tyler - His wife Letitia died in 1842, midway through his term as President, and he was thus a widower for about a year and a half before he remarried in 1844, near the end of his term.
- Chester A. Arthur - his wife Ellen passed away in 1880, the year he ran for the Presidency
- Grover Cleveland - did not marry until 1886, about a year into his first term.
- Benjamin Harrison - his wife Caroline died near the end of his term, so he was a widower for the last few months of his Presidency.
- Woodrow Wilson - his first wife Ellen died in 1914 and he married his 2nd wife Edith in 1915, so he was unmarried for about a year of his Presidency.
