If you have tile 20in by 20in and need to tile a room 420 sq feet how would you figure out how much tile you would need and the cost if each tile was 3.98 and sales tax of 7.5 %

You have to know the dimensions of the room to know how many tiles you need to cut, and so on. But since this is a math problem, and not a construction problem, let's say that 420 square feet is

420 * 144 square inches

Each tile is 400 square inches

Divide to get the number of tiles. It might be around 151 tiles. Multiply that by $3.98 to get the price before tax.

Hi. It's easier if you convert to the same units first. Find the number of square inches in 420 square feet (or the number of square feet in each tile). Divide to get the number of tiles (in reality you have to round up because stores don't sell parts of a tile). Multiply by unit price ($3.98) and multiply THAT by 1.075.

20*20=400 sq in
420 sq ft = 21 ft * 20 ft = 252 in * 240 in = 60480 sq in
60480/400 = 151.2 tiles
151.2 round up
152 * $3.98 * 1.075 = $650.33

But I would not buy 152 tiles. Rule of thumb for buying tile is buy an extra 10% to cover broken/misused tile and edges. So buy:
152 + 10% = 152 * 1.1 = 167.2 = 168
168 * $3.98 * 1.075 = $718.79

1) figure out how many square feet is covered by 1 tile (hint: 1 sq. ft = 12x12 sq. in.)

2) Divide 420 by this number to figure out how many tiles you need.

3) Multiply by the price, then add 7.5% tax.

since I have indtalled eile defore Thid was ease ! The breakdown
20" x 20 " = 2.7556 sq.ft.
divide 420 sq.ft. by this
420 / 2.7556 = 152.41689 tiles which rounds to 153 tiles
153 tiles x 3.98 = 608.94
608.94 x 7.5 % = 45.67
608.94 + 45.67 = 654.61
there you go hopes this helps
and by the way would you want any help ?

20in^2/(420 * 144) = x rounded up to the nearest whole number

x * 3.98 = subtotal = s

s * .075 = t

total cost = s + t

Each tile is 2.777 sq ft.
420/2.777 = 151.2 so you'd buy 152 tiles.
152 x $3.98 = $604.96
$604.96 x 1.075 = $650.33
