Not a small magnet....A magnet from a big speaker.....

You want to keep magents well away from your machine - can cause all kinds of problems depending on the strength of it. Best plan is keep then as far away as is possible. Can corrupt data, alter the function of drives - damage your monitor etc. Try holding even a small magnet anywhere near your screen and you'll see the result.

The magnet will cause interferance in the functioning of the PC. I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems.
Some RAM/hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful. Try this site, if you can get what is required.

Putting a magnet near ANY electronic equipment is a bad idea. As in never, ever do it. Possible to cause erasure on the HDD, ruin other components. Why, planning to do a dirty deed? ;)

well if its stuck on the outside of the case, probably nothing, even if it got up real close the HDD it might have little effect
