Or do they normally come with a software to get it running?

You will need software for the drives. I suggest getting a dvd/cd writer external drive that comes with software.. then you can transfer from one puter to another with no problem..

Remember to do this with the computer unplugged. Remove the side and you should have up to 2 screws per side. Unplug the gray IDE cable and reverse the steps. As said before make sure you set the black jumper to either master or slave whichever it will serve as. Good luck.

I'm pretty sure you can just plug it in if you want. My dad did this went one broke so I would say yes.

If you're running XP, you should be able to just make the switch. Any other OS you may need to install drivers.

yes, IDE CD-roms themselves are plug and play.
