I've been playing piano since I was like 5, and for my 18th birthday I'm getting an electric guitar. I've been playing acoustic for a couple months. My mother seems convinced that the only way to get good at guitar is with lessons; because that's what she did. I can already play the most common chords, and read tabs. So with all the free info online what the hell do I need lessons for?

If you think you don't need lessons then tell her no . Just remember, some of the greatest musicians in the world have studied with masters and that's how they got to be great. I'm 36 and have been playing drums for 16 years . I'm a pretty good rock drummer and have a roomful of professional instruments and equipment . But...if Dom Famularo showed up wanting to give me lessons I didn't have to pay for.....hmmm....Think I'd ride that gravytrain til the wheels fell off. Good luck with the new AXE

Style and presence.

Yes, you DO NEED lessons. You're not "all that" hon, no matter what you find online.

My son has been playing guitar for three years, is extremely good and a total natural, but even he knows that without lessons you're a NOTHING.
Granted, he started off taking lessons at an advanced level, but they will help teach you more than you would if you were "self-taught."
You have to have perspective from someone else's point of view to know what you're actually lacking.
Finger picking, style of music, ways of using what you have that you wouldn't think of on your own...
That's what lessons give you.

My son plays several other instruments as well, has perfect pitch, has been exposed to music in various forms, styles, genre's, periods...etc...since he was small, but you can always learn more.
If you're so arrogant that you think you don't need lessons you'll only be doing yourself harm.

Some people really don't need lessons. I took lessons for like 5 months when I got started playing and my teacher was one of the coolest people ever, had his own band and stuff. But the biggest thing was I practiced all the damn time, got tabs, chord books, etc. It wasn't hard work to me, it was fun and it still is. Some people need an extra push, others don't. If you don't feel you need them, don't take them. No reason to waste money on that.
Tell your mom you don't need them. You have to tell your parents they're wrong sometimes.

you dont NEED lessons, technically.

but you still should take them! this is a great opporttunity. lessons will help you so much and better too. especially if your mom is offering to pay for it. definitely. you want to be good, right? learning online is not the same as having someone right there. it is a lame substitute.

by the way, it sounds like your mom is trying to give you a hint that you need help.

You don't need lessons. Just tell her that. You have to remember that mom doesn't play guitar and she is only trying to encourage you to do what you enjoy. Be kind to her.
