It doesn't, the universe is expanding so fast there's no end to it.

Space is not a matter . It is nothing - emptiness - vacuum. Since it is "NOTHING " it has no shape . A THING will necessarily hae a shape and it would have some circumscription. But something that is NOT A THING, can have no shape . Since it is nothing , it had no beginning and no end .The huan mind is unable to conceive this even to day. The only thng that can have NO BEGINNING AND NO END AND NO MIDDLE AND NO HIGHT OR DEAPTH is 'NOTHING " only. That is he speciality of space . If emptiness is no there things can not exist or mover .So emptiness that ois nothing must be there for things to exist . Wha a stange s9ituation. Emptiness means nothing . So nothing means that there is nothing existing . But we say that the is space and space is nothing - so we say ThaT 'NOTHING ' EXISTS ( WHAT A CONTRDICTION!) We need space for any thng to be kept ,or present . If that 'NOTHING' does not exist - no matter in the uniVerse can exist . SO EMPTINESS - NOTHNG - IS A BEING OF NON -BEING . This is what Krishna while showing his Viswa Roopa( shape of the universe ) to Arjuna says in Bhagavad -Gita that he is a being of non -being in whom every thing in the unverse exists as the pearls woven in a web. If the space ends somewhre , there is should be somethign else beyond the point whe ethe space ends . That will be spaxce again and space beig nothing how can it begin or end anywhere ?Space is the most wonderful thng in the uniersrese which even the modern scientists themselves have not yet fully undestood . This is unlikely to be understood as ha is he higher existence of Krishna and whawe see in the unerse is only os speck of his lower existnece as revealed by himself in his teachings to Arjuna in Bhagavad -Gita. This is why Albert Einstein himself remarked that when he had read Bhagavad -Gita and reflected on the creation of the universe , everything else seems superfluous !

Kib, its been documented that the furthest galaxy so far that has been discovered is over 13 billion light years away. BUt this is only the furthest galaxy, and we still dont know or havent found anything else out there... yet. Our technology is still reaching new heights and levels.

But your question is about space. So far , it is infinite. The big bang theory describes the matter that formed the galaxies that we see now. and since those galaxies as still moving outward.. space is infinite.

BUt look into this theroy. the BIG CRUNCH. it is a theory that says that Space is not infinte, once the furthest galaxies reach this "Wall" of the universe, all the galaxies will bounce back to the original Big Bang area. kinda like a rubber band stretching out between yout tow hands and you let go of one end. SNAP!

It doesn't end, it curves around.

A 2-dimensional analogy would be the surface of the Earth. Space is like that, but in 3 dimensions, which is hard (impossible?) for most people to visualize.

Space ends right around the star Alpha-Centuri ( which is the closest star to earth 2 light years or so). Everything else we see? Just a back drop.. It like the horizon in a video game.. only there to fill our curiousity of what else is outthere. There will probably be an expansion pack ... but not for a while :-)

It might be infinite, but no one can prove THAT. Because they have never seen the end. "Universe is always expanding" or "it is infinite" and the like are just theories, and not proven fact. If it is proven fact, someone show me please.

So, no one knows that.
