I have avg free and have updated to avg free 7.5 there was no charge in doing so. There has been a lot of confusion about the pop-up that avg is sending everyone.
What avg is basically trying to tell you is....that as of January 2007 they will be discontinuing their free 7.1 anti-virus and that you need to update to the new free version 7.5
If you go to their web site you will notice that both the free and paid versions of avg are now both 7.5
Avg will not be charging for the free version....I know that because I have it...also if you go to their support forum you will read the same thing from an admn.
AVG free 7.5 will still be free.
Hope that this helps you!
Read this link I got it from avg forum this should clear up any confusion.

This is 100% true, you wil have to pay for the once free AVG antivirus program come the first of the year.
I used Avast for nine plus years an I never had one virus. The free personal home verson. Their corporate version is the same they just make corporate pay. You will get auto. updates two or three times per day, plus Avast as one of the the very background scanners that really works in real time to catch a virus and delete or destroy before the virus enters your system.
They will ask you for your email so they can send you your free key that is good for one year. After one year just request a new key.

If you go to http://www.grisoft.com/ then go to the FAQ it says that the "free version" is only free for 30 days, and then you need a license number. sorry, go to another suite like Panda. You can get an online check here:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/activescan/ascan_2.asp
also they have a free desktop version!!

AVG is JUNK. I recommend active virus shield. It is the best and it is FREE.
