There are several ways to install & repair lawns. Slit seeding is simply cutting small slices in the lawn while seed is droped into them. To compleatly redo a lawnyou first remove the grass and weeds that are there by either skimming the top off or spaying a vegetation killer over it. You then either bring in new top soil, grade it out and seed it, or you loosen the top few inches of the existing soil and then seed it.

I assume pieces of sod. Scalp the existing grass with a weed
eater, rake it out smooth, lay the sod and water. The other ways
described are more " correct " but the above way works just as
well and is less labor.

Have soil ammendmet rototilled into the lawn the leveled then soded
