I had 3 ultrasounds down with my first one!! They are perfectly safe and can't harm the baby! Most doctors will actually schedule you for two..One around 16 weeks and one around 32..Good Luck and Congrats!!

I am 48 years old. My husband and I have 4 children. The older 3 are 27, 25, and 22. Back in the days of being pregnant with them, no one ever had an ultrasound unless there were some serious issues with the baby or the pregnancy. I did not have an ultrasound with any of those 3 pregnancies. Then, we had a surprise pregnancy when I was 38. Our older kids were 18, 15, and 12 when our youngest was born. I was high risk with my age, gestational diabetes, and I had been taking several different medications before finding out I was 17 weeks pregnant. I had 10 ultrasounds with her. Each one revealed the exact same thing, that she was growing fine. I understand the change of thinking by many doctors to do a lot of testing because of the huge increase in lawsuits when something goes wrong, even if it isn't preventable. I didn't think having so many ultrasounds was necessary, but the doctors all insisted. I would suggest that if your wife has had an ultrasound and everything was fine that a second one is not needed unless your doctor can give you a good reason why a second one should be done.

If the doctor suspects a problem, or wants to be sure of something, then I say do the scan. Multiple scan are not going to cause a problem with the baby.

By scan I assume you mean ultrasound. If the doctor recommended it i would say yes do it. They do them for several reasons. Sometimes the way the baby lies prevents them from seeing some of the baby's anatomy. But usually they do them for a weight check on the baby and to see which way the baby is presenting. (breech) just so they know what to expect your deliverly to be like. Congratulations!! and Good Luck!

No reason to do it as a routine thing.

Some moms don't ever have any u/s at all done unless there is a medical indication for it.

One answerer mentioned checking position - A skilled caregiver can tell baby's position by just feeling mom's belly.

by scan, I'm assuming you mean ultrasound? If so, why wouldn't you want to have it done. Especially if the Dr. recommends it. Ultrasounds have not been found to harm the fetus...maybe irritate it, because of the sound waves, but not harmful.
