I would like to thank both the poster and people answering this question for making my afternoon, I've been laughing so hard reading this idiocy that my sides hurt.

Some individual comments:

"clueless" - never has a nickname been more perfectly chosen

"thisparrothead", "crckd_cueball", "sweetie k", "sexmagnet" - you all should go soak your heads in the ocean for giving your answers. Water is clear you dimwits; the ocean is blue because it reflects the sky, not vice-versa.

"Duncarin" - I feel your pain, My desk is currently dented from hitting it with my head multiple times after reading this question.

"robertc1985" - By far the best answer I've ever read on Yahoo answers. If I could, I would award you 10,000 points for that one.

Peace!

Dude, learn to use spell check. Or at least try to spell. If this kid is from the US, I know now that the education system here sucks. To answer your question: The sky is black, it is always black. It is blue because when the Sun is "up", the atmosphere and whatever particles happen to be in the atmosphere spread the light spectrum into its' visible components. Blue is the wavelenght that is spread the most and is thus the one our brain perceives.
Or to put in simple terms so your simple mind can understand: d sky b blue coz d sun lite iz spred by d ayr n blue iz d 1 wii c.

First of all ,all will be thinking that it is a silly question , but i appreciate u. As our Earth is filled with a medium so sun rays r allowed to enter our Earth & due to the refraction of the water bodies on the Earth it appears to be blue during day time but during night no sun rays fall .But when u consider space as whole it not does have any medium so no reflection takes place

When you look at the sky, you don't technically see space. Some peoploe say that it's a reflection of the ocean, but that would be a really big mirror. What it really is is refracted light off the earth's stratosphere from the sun's light. It's also a light chain reaction when you see the sun turn red during a sun-down because of the refracted light.

you are seeing blue because light is made up of different visible and non visible rays.

What we can see is the visible rays only, amongst the visible ray blue is the most penetrating colour.

All other colours are eaten up or absorbed, so we see blue only.

Same with the Ocean.

Water in the glass is clear. But at the sea shore it looks yellowish but further way from the land it is deep ocean water so we see it blue.

the sky appears to be blue due to scattering of sunlight by the air molecules in the atmosphere. light of shorter wavelength scatters more. blue has a shorter wavelength and hence scatters more than the other colours of vibgyor(violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, red). this makes the sky appear blue.

There is actually nothing as sky. whawe see as blue sky is the dispesal of the sun's light in the atmosphere of gases and dust . Beyond tha blanket of the atmoshphere , ther eis vacuum and here is nothing there to disperse the ligh coming from the sun and we see nothing beyond the earths's atmosphere , So it is dark.Light itself is invisible and it is only things that are visible due to the reflection of the light by the things .We so not see the space from the earth as nothing beyond the blanket of the atmospher is visible to us . the space is beyond the earth's blanket of gases is dark thoudh the are zillions and zillions of stars and luminous bodies in the vast space , because of he immensity of the empty space and the distnces between the celestail bosies .
(It is because of this tha God is shown in he shape of the unierse in Bhagavad -Gita and krishna - the very name is used to mean the colour blue and black. Krihna is repored to show the form - the totality of God to Arjuna at his request , in the shape of the universe - known as Viswa Roopa - (Viswam = Universe . Roopa = shape )In the Hindu Mythology , the primordial Gods , Shiva and Vishnu ( krishna ) are shown in black and blue coloir only.

Oh. My. God. It is people like you who make us teenagers hated in the internet.

But to answer your question, you do not look directly into the space, we look through multiple kilometers of atmosphere. So either it is air, or reflection of the oceans like some people here say.

light coming from sun is scattered by the particles present in the atmosphere.
as different wavelengths of light are scattered to different extent in which blue is scattered the moost and red the least thats why we see the sky to be blue and the light reaching us is somewhat reddish.!
