I have a 1996 Ford F150 with the 4.9. First symptoms were increasingly rough running starting about 15 minutes into a drive till it bucked to a stop. I checked fuel pressure and am pulling about 55lbs key on and was holding appropriate pressure during idle on both pumps. Last time on the way to a shop, it stopped after only 5 minutes and it hasn't started since. Computer checks okay. I have replaced just about everything from the crank senor to the IAC. The last time it choked on my I noticed at the very rough idle, the exhaust manifold near where it enters the car was red hot (after 5 minutes). The cat was trashed and that has been replaced. Still won't start. The only things I haven’t replaced are the two fuel pumps and the fuel pressure regulator. Is there a test for the fuel pressure regulator that can be performed on the bench? Any clues before I send this to target practice. Thanks!

When U pull the Vac Hose off the regulator it should raise the pressure some - Have U checked 2 C if there is Vac there ? IF the CAT was trashed & a red hot exhaust - it sounds like U DON'T have a Fuel problem.I would check ALL the Vac hoses - especially the MAP vac hose.

Sometimes people forget to clean the interior surfaces of their battery terminals. Cleaning your battery cable terminals is best accomplished using a mechanical means such as a battery brush. A battery brush will remove any oxidation or corrosion that impedes current flow. Clean all surfaces until they're shiny. Battery brushes can be purchased at any auto parts store for a few dollars. Tighten terminals after cleaning to the point that they can't be moved by hand. No need to really torque them down, just tight enough so they can't be moved by hand. If this doesn't solve your problem, you may just need to recharge your battery.

Try checking the idle air control valve and make sure it isn't stuck. Ford had a recall on it a while back.

Does the battery mantain a charge. Are you sure you are not running off the batter? It would indicate a bad alterator

if the exhaust is red then you are burning fuel in the exhaust which usually means that you are not getting spark in all cylinders. so its probably a coil.

Those symptoms sound like a bad coil.
