Welfare is always painted gloom and doom because the perception is that minorities are the greatest recipients. Well asked the 60% whites that receive it. Also asked the Sugar Industry and Ford Motor Company and Delta Airlines. Shall I say more.
Welfare (Government Aid) is a temporary situation in extraordinary desperate times. Without it we would have seen Chrysler crash and burn and Boeing. do a double flip. Israel is also on the recipient list along with South Korea, etc.

I get tired of the stereo type that people who do not like welfare is becuase of minorities that use it the most. WE ALL KNOW WHAT WHITES by numbers use it the most becuase there are MORE WHITE PEOPLE, however its bad for anyone who is able to work becuase it takes away their motivation to work and then they loose skills to take care of themselves. Think of this, man has gone thousands of years without social security, government healthcare and so on, we all survied, but once someone gets on a government plan and it is threatened to be defunded becuase the government is broke we all act like these people will just die if they have to get off their asses and find a job. Now there are people who do need welfare but the VAST majority are just lazy baby making machines that think everyone owes them something and many are addicted to drugs. Spend sometime at a grocery store and watch people wipping out their food stamp card and get two carts full of soda and potato chips and then place it int he back of their 70k Cadillac Escalade.

as I see it, welfare is for two reasons....for those who can't work due to illness, injury, sickness or birth defect. If they were not supported in some way, then who would support them and how would they live? So welfare for them is a given.
the other reason for welfare is to help people get back to work or supplement for a time until they can educate and earn more. Welfare too is for people who have had disasters or misfortune. So I believe education is a good thing to get people earning and self-respecting themselves which makes their life better.
Is it good for America's economy? definitely

Welfare is a safety net. Without it, many of the people that so many Americans complain about would have nothing at all, and a person with nothing at all generally reaches a point at which they become desperate and "lash out". Welfare is good for all of us.

Absolutely not.
It eliminates incentives for people to be productive.
If you want to see a welfare state in America, come to Louisiana. We have more government programs and welfare recipients than you can shake a stick at. The result is the poorest state in the country with a terrible economy.

While being in place for Social reasons, it does have an effect on the economy, which is probably positive at the end of the day.
It will have an effect on incentives to work, but also reduces crime, and other behaviours that would have a negative effect on the economy.
Go back 100years and retirement was a one way trip into poverty. Now there is an industry that caters for the elderly, that is an economic benefit.

Zack G,
I would say that welfare to the really needy is a necessary form of care that can not be replaced. The problem is not the needy, but the leeches that get attached to the system and distroy it for everyone else.
