brain age was amusing for a few weeks, and would also provide something that you could play.
mario and luigi: partners in time was spectacular. combining mario gameplay with rpg elements. very fun game
i hear nothing but good things about final fantasy III
children of mana is an action rpg along the lines of zelda-esque game play

don't rule out the fact that you can play gameboy advance games on the DS
there are literally tons of games for the gba
zelda - link to the past is an awesome game
final fantasy V just came out, and IV came out a short while back

If he likes Role Playing Games, get him Final Fantasy III
If he likes Turn Based Strategy games, get him Advance Wars 3
If he is a little girl, get him That's So Raven.

My personal favorite is Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow. Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin should also be good.
There's also Final Fantasy III.
