This might be a dumb question, but I really have no idea?! Does the hospital or someone help you do it? Or do you have to do that yourself? If so, how do you go about getting your newborn a SSN?

It's not a dumb question. I wondered the same thing, when I was pregnant with my first. When you fill out the paper work at the hospital, you can choose to have a social security card sent to your home for your baby. The administration department at the hospital will walk you through everything from SSN, birth certificate, and everything else you wouldn't even have thought of.

Most people are answering that the hospital does it for you. This wasn't the case with my sons (both born in Michigan). The hospital took care of the birth certificate, but once that came in the mail, we had to take it to the Social Security Administration office and apply for a card and they mailed it to us several weeks later.

The hospital doesn't always take care of it. If your baby is born in December, they will not file it (because of tax confusion). If this is the case, you take a birth certificate and one other form of proof of birth (the discharge papers from the hospital, something) and they will file it. My social security office got our baby her SSN within 3 weeks after filing and it only took about 10 minutes to file.

It can take up four weeks to get the card in the mail. If you have a social security office in your town you can go down there and explain to them that you want to get a passport for the baby but have not recieved the card yet. If you got the paper at the hospital when you filed for the card they should have given you a reciept. Hopefully this helps.

The hospital has you fill out the appropriate paperwork before you leave the hospital and a card is sent to you about 6-8 weeks later.

The hospital's in Michigan send a person to your room to do your birth record, as well as sign your child up for their social security number. I believe it then comes by mail.
