Both of my parents were singers (then they became smokers) so singing was one of their many gifts to me. I got started in singing lessons pretty early on to develop that gift and took chorus and voices classes from junior high through college as well as music theory and piano lessons. I became that annoying kid in the music department who got all the solo parts.
In addition to that I was going to jam sessions that were advertised around the city and in that way my name got out. Musicians started calling me for gigs, I eventually put my own band together from the musicians I knew and wound up recording and touring.
Does it happen for everyone this way? Of course not. I didn't have the benefit of the internet back then...Al Gore hadn't invented it yet! lol But even in this day and age of .coms designed to get your name out there, you should still make sure you're a complete package.
Learn your music theory, vocal technique, at least one instrument. If all you are is a voice, you probably won't be taken very seriously and if you are you won't last long unless you have a very exceptional voice. Look at all the boy bands (and girl bands) comprised of members who were not also actual musicians. Most couldn't read a note, didn't write music and disappeared fairly quickly.
Listen to EVERYTHING not just the genre you want to work in. The more kinds of music you hear, the more versatile you'll be when performing your own stuff. You hear all the time about musicians going to Brazil, Africa, etc. to absorb the music cultures there. It pays off, believe me.
Be flexible...a lot of singers who don't make it as recording artists find lucrative work singing in clubs, on cruise ships, doing commercial jingles, teaching (which I also do), musical theatre. Ok those jobs may not be as glamourous as being the next Whitney Houston (and look what happened to HER), but at least you can do what you love and make a good living at it until that big break comes along.
And if you don't have a natural talent, not to worry, singing lessons will bring out and enhance anything you have. There is at least one song for each person out there that they can sing well. You start from that one song, and take it from there.

'm not a professional singer, much less any musical genius, but here's my thought. Some people possess natural ability to sing at a very young age. For example, that yodeling 8-year-old from America's Got Talent. For those who wish to learn how to sing (I'm going to safely assume you, as it were) There are vocal training classes that you can attend and they have some really good REALLY good teachers of the voice.

I just loved to sing from the time I was old enough to watch and hear other artists....music brought me through so many hard times. and I found others into music, coffee houses and such...become friends with musicians as I can sing but can't play any instruments...it helps to find those that can play while you sing...

First see a voice coach to see if you have the physical goods. If so then take vocal lessons and try out for local shows
