It can be the best, or the worst. I have had both between times in uni. I did market research, and later sold tools for a supplier, as I will discuss below. As one person said, in the wrong company it can be like slave labour, but not necessarily so!
If you have a good attitude and don't let blighters bother you, and you work for a good company, it can be great.
Otherwise, it can be one of the most stressful, unpleasant jobs on earth.
I might add, I have had friends who mirror my experience, working all sorts of jobs from telecom customer service to selling thing incoming and outgoing calls.
Also, if in sales, the money can be very good, I made really good money selling to people calling in to buy small tools and machinery.

I worked in a call centre for a Market Research company based in the North of England (which will remain nameless) I worked there for three years. The working conditions were draconian to say the least & still are dreadful i.e. no windows hence no daylight, the so called rest brakes were 10minutes x1 before lunch & lunch brake was only 20mins (the shift was 6hrs long). The job was at times both boring, & sole destroying, why? because alot of people were very rude, aggressive & unhelpful. This kind of work often feels endless & meaningless, and totally frustrating as you feel you have achieved little or nothing beyond the money you make.

Wage rates were & still are disgustingly low for phone based work like market researchers, new starter were on £5.15ph, intermediates on £5.65 and senior staff on £6.15ph. In other words it was like slave labour & we used to see an extremely high turn over (churn rate) of staff as a result, Not many people work for the firm for longer than about 6mths. The company depended upon a constant process of recruitment, training and then an immediate loss of staff. To this day I still dont know how they stay in business when they basically are exploiting people (staff).

**no! call centre work is the new swet shops of the 21st centuary, the new digital swet shop.

**frankly I never want to work in another call centre ever again after 3 yrs of it.

I work in a call centre, but probably a different kind. We only take incoming calls... no sales involved at all. At first i didnt like it... now its ok... some days it can be dead.... others it can be busy so the days go quicker. So really, it depends on what type of call centre work. However, if it was sales-based i know i wouldnt like it at all... too much pressure for me.

I'd rather slit my wrists than work in a call centre. I went for a call centre job once and I am SOOO glad I didn't get it - all those miserable-looking workers was really demoralising.

call centre jobs give you better communication skills which are important in any job. It is not the best job in the world but is any job

I don't understand why everyone complains so much. If you don't like working in a call center, go get another job.

I worked in a call center for a year. While it wasn't the job I wanted to do for the rest of my life, it set me up for bigger and better things.

I got promoted to manage the call center... then I was promoted to trouble-shoot system issues and manage system testing.

I have a great job now (a great career) because I worked in a call center learning the business.

worst. Not only are all the women who work there fat "we used to call them the herd", they all have pissy attitudes for sitting on their butts all day and listening to people complain.
The office politics there are absolutly awful too. I wouldn't work at one ever again. Also you are monitered all the frickin time on how many calls you take, the things you say on the phone, and your sales and retentions.
